Shelagh’s Critical Take On The Coverage Of Tom Daley’s Baby News

Share

Tom Daley has made headlines after announcing he was having a baby with his husband - but Shelagh Fogarty questions why the woman involved has failed to get a mention in the media's coverage.

The Olympic diver shared on social media yesterday that he and US film director Dustin Lance Black were expecting their first child.

The couple married in Devon last year.

But, Shelagh was left wondering why no media outlet had made reference to the woman its coverage of the news.

Giving her taken, she said: “Naturally people wish them well, naturally people are happy when a family's been created of course.

“But, all the headlines are they are expecting a baby but she, this random woman that we know nothing of, I'm not saying she needs to be identified, I'm not saying she needs to be interviewed but I want just one reference, just one reference to the woman who is actually expecting the baby.

“Who is actually going through nine months of bodily change and an emotional change in order to give birth to that child, the woman who will go into labour and give birth to that child just one mention of that would have been nice and I can't find one in any of the coverage about Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black.

“It’s as though she's been excised from the picture and by she I just mean the fact of a woman being absolutely intrinsic to this thing happening at all and I find that rather sinister, do you?”

Watch above and see if you agree with Shelagh Fogarty.
