Created by cartoonist Matt Groening, the film is based on Fox's long-running satirical series, which follows the Simpson family through their day-to-day lives.

The film poster was shared on Instagram with a picture of a doughnut being grabbed and a tagline that read: "Homer's coming back for seconds."

Fans flooded the comment section with disbelief and excitement at the news of the sequel.

The series follows the Simpson family, comprising Homer and Marge, and their three children: Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

The characters first appeared in 1987 as cartoon shorts before it premiered as a series in 1989.

It has gone on to run for 37 seasons and it was announced earlier this year that the show has been renewed through to its 40th season.

Here is what we know about the sequel.

When is The Simpsons Movie 2 coming out?

The sequel was confirmed on Monday by 20th Century Studios, with a release date set for July 23, 2027.

Who will star in the sequel?

The cast has not been revealed yet, but the first film featured guest appearances from Albert Brooks, Tom Hanks, Green Day band members, Erin Brockovich, Minnie Driver, Isla Fisher, and Edward Norton.

The regular cast includes:

  • Dan Castellaneta: Homer Simpson, Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Groundskeeper Willie, Barney Gumble, Mayor Quimby,

Marcia Wallace voiced Edna Krabappel before her death in 2013, while Pamela Hayden voiced Milhouse Van Houten, Rod Flanders, and Jimbo Jones, before her retirement last year.

No director has been revealed for the second film.

What is the plot of the second film? Is there a trailer?

No plot details, nor a trailer, have been released - but the announcement parodied the first poster, showing Homer reaching for another donut, which has sprinkles in the shapes of little twos.

The first film saw Homer accidentally pollute Springfield's water supply, leaving him with the blame and the task of saving the city and his family.

On TV, the 37th series of the show is now underway. While the plot moves forward at a glacial pace, recent-ish developments have included the demise of Moe's Tavern barfly Larry Dalrymple and the apparent death of Marge - although the staple character has made a return.

There is not yet a trailer.
