Sword attack at Swedish school leaves several teenagers injured

Police confirmed on Friday that they were called to the Brinell School in Fagersta shortly after 14:00 local time (13:00 BST) on Friday, where officers arrested one man.

A third person was wounded, police confirmed, with the extent of their injuries unconfirmed.

Initial reports by local media suggest the suspect was shot in the leg by police at the scene.

The school, located in a town North West of the capital Stockholm, teaches around 500 students.

Police said they had one person in custody and were investigating the incident.

Posting to X, Sweden's Prime Minsiter Ulf Kristersson described the attack as a "serious incident," adding: "we do not know what lies behind the act, but we know that police are working very intensively".

The incident marks the latest attack on a school in the country in recent years, with the 2025 mass shooting at an adult education centre in Orebro claiming the lives of 11 people, including the gunman.

Students at Brinell School had just returned from the summer break when the attack took place.

The new term began this week, with students returning to the classroom on either on Monday or Wednesday, depending on their year group.

The aftermath of last year's attack led to stricter gun laws in the country.

It comes after the government discovered that the suspect legally owned four rifles, three of which were taken to the education centre on the day of the attack.
