The Tories Have Become "The Brexit Party" - And We Stand For More: Tory MP
The Conservatives have become the “Brexit Party” and all the other big political issues are being “shut out”, a former minister has told LBC.
Sam Gyimah quit the government last month because of Theresa May’s plan for leaving the EU.
The ex-Science Minister now wants the issue put back to the people in a second referendum if the parliamentary deadlock cannot be broken.
He joined James O'Brien on Wednesday morning.
“What is the Conservative Party at the moment?” James O’Brien asked the Tory MP for East Surrey.
“The Conservative Party since the referendum has become ‘the Brexit Party’,” he replied.
“It’s become ‘the Brexit Party’ committed to delivering Brexit, I was committed to delivering Brexit, and we are where we are - we are going to have a vote on it in a few weeks time.
“But, the Conservative Party stands for more, what’s happened with Brexit is it has completely shut out all the other big issues that people care about in their day-to-day lives.
“All the political energy is going on delivering Brexit, so in terms of who we are as a party; focusing on aspiration, being pro-business, focusing on delivering efficient and well-run public services - all of that has been subordinated to Brexit.”
