Why Does It Smell After You Cut The Grass?

Question: Why does it smell after you cut the grass?

Name: Joe, Doncaster

Qualification: Golf greenkeeper

Answer: Grass releases a chemical when it’s cut which helps to deter herbivores. The chemical acts as a warning to other grass plants that the grass is being eaten. This allows them to build up toxins in the leaves (which is why sheep move around a field when grazing).
