Pope Francis' coffin has been taken to church for burial following his funeral in the Vatican and a procession through the streets of Rome

Vast numbers gathered in Vatican City for the 88-year-old’s funeral for a final farewell to the pontiff who died on Monday.

US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the Prince of Wales were among attendees for the funeral of 'the people’s pope'.

Others include French President Emmanuel Macron, former US president Joe Biden, Irish President Michael D Higgins and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Mr Zelenskyy and Mr Trump were pictured meeting on the sidelines of the funeral.

Some 250,000 mourners paid their respects to Pope Francis over a three-day lying-in-state, which ran overnight from Wednesday due to high demand.

  • Doors close as Pope's funeral continues in private

    The doors of the Santa Maria Maggiore church have closed so the final parts of the Pope's funeral can take place in private.

    The pallbearers have now moved into a private area within the church, away from the public eye, for a closed ceremony.

    Before his passing, Francis had expressed a wish to be buried in a modest grave, marked only with the Latin form of his name: "Franciscus."

  • Pope's coffin received by 'poor and needy' at Santa Maria Maggiore church

    The Pope's coffin has been received by a "group of poor and needy people" as it arrived at St Mary Major church where he will be buried. 

    The coffin arrived after a procession through Rome where crowds had gathered to pay their respects and clapped as the casket drove past. 

     The Holy See said on Thursday that a "group of poor and needy people" would be present on the steps leading to Saint Mary Major to pay their last respects to Francis before he is entombed. 

     The burial will be held in private. 

     The Vatican previously announced that people will be able to visit Francis's tomb from Sunday morning.

    Attendees, who gathered in their thousands in St Peter's Square with some bearing banners and signs, clapped as the casket was carried into the building after the open-air funeral mass.

    "Dear brothers and sisters, let us commend to God's tender mercy the soul of Pope Francis, bishop of the Catholic," he says.

    The Prince of Wales spoke briefly to US President Donald Trump and the first lady Melania Trump on his way into the service, Kensington Palace said. 

     William also encountered and spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron before the mass.
