Hackney residents are being advised to keep windows closed as a fire at a waste recycling centre chokes the streets with smoke.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers are battling the blaze in Hepscott Road, Hackney Wick, which has been alight since just before midnight last night.

The warehouse contains around 15,000 tonnes of mixed household waste and is generating a considerable amount of smoke.

Smoke from the blaze is blowing across the A12 and drivers are urged to take extra care. The fire brigade is advising residents to keep windows and doors shut.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. More to follow…
