A rescue operation has successfully rescued all passengers from a British tourist ship that sank off a Greek island.

The local coastguard confirmed that 18 passengers were on board the British-flagged vessel, although the nationalities of those on board was not immediately clear.

Several boats and two helicopters helped with the efforts. The 30-metre vessel sand off the northwest coast of the island of Milos.

Greece's coastguard carried out a search and rescue operation for around a dozen passengers.

It is not yet known what caused the ship to sink.

A local spokeswoman for the coastguard confirmed that "as far as we know" all involved in the incident were of Greek nationality, adding that all passengers are in a "healthy" condition.

The rescued passengers have since been taken to Milos.
