Counter terror police arrested four people at Luton Airport at the weekend on suspicion of being members of a proscribed organisation.

All four are Sri Lankan nationals who were arrested upon arrival to London Luton Airport on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed three men aged 35, 39 and 41 plus a 35-year-old woman were taken into custody with the female being bailed until early November, pending further inquiries.

All were arrested under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and were stopped in the airport under the Terrorism Act 2000.

The Met's Counter Terrorism Command are now leading the investigation, supported by the Eastern Region Specialist Operation Unit.

Each of the three men remain in custody at a south London police station.

Being a member of a banned organisation defies section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
