A 26-year-old man who was arrested in the UK after arriving from Turkey this week has been charged with a terrorism offence.

Mamun Rashid, from east London, has been charged with preparation of terrorist acts and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday, according to the Metropolitan Police.

He was arrested at Heathrow Airport on Thursday after disembarking a flight from Turkey. It came after Turkish officials said a British suspected member of the Islamic State had been deported.

In a statement after his arrest, the Metropolitan Police said the case was "Syria-related" and said that he had arrived "on an inbound flight from Turkey".

The Home Office has so far refused to disclose any details, saying it does not comment on individual cases.
