Sainsbury's have reverted back to using tills in their first "till-free" store, saying "not all customers are ready" for it.

The store lasted just three months before tills were reinstated.

The store, in Holborn, had been refurbished to allow customers to scan their groceries and pay for them automatically on an app as they went around the store.

Sainsbury's said that this would free up shop assistants to help.

However, Sainsbury's have said that this system resulted in long queues at the helpdesk as customers attempted to pay for their shopping in the traditional way.

Sainsbury's said that they learnt "a huge amount" from the three month experiment.

In a blogpost this week, the company admitted: "It's clear that not all our customers are ready for a totally till-free store."

The option to pay via app is still available at the Holborn shop and eight others across London.
