A British man has died while snowboarding in Andorra.

The 59-year-old lost control and hit a tree, according to the Grandvalira ski resort in the Pyrenees mountains.

The incident happened on the Avet slope, a black run recommended for experienced skiers.

It is understood he was alone at the time and suffered a cardiac arrest.

In a statement, the resort said emergency rescue teams rushed to help him - adding: "They transferred him to the bottom of the slope, but despite all efforts to revive him, he died minutes later."

Andorran police are investigating possible causes for the incident.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "Our staff are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Andorra, and are in contact with the local authorities."
