Why do tennis players bounce the ball on the ground before they serve? James knew the answer to this one.

Question

Why do tennis players bounce the ball before they’re about to serve?

Simon, High Wycombe

Answer

It helps you get your body in the right position to serve, the left arm goes through an arc when you serve, so the bouncing gets your body in the right position for an ace. The other reason is that it’s something to do with rituals, much like the way in which Rafael Nadal has his own tics and rituals which are part of a psychological process of getting ‘in the zone’.
