Why do doors have panels in them?

Answer: If you look at a door and take out the outer stiles and the centre mullion, you are left with the panels.
This can't be filled with just one plank of wood. A door is built from lots of skinny pieces of wood, not one thick piece.
It comes down to timber size and using all trees to build lots of things.
