Why Is A Recorder Called A Recorder If It Doesn’t Record?
Mystery Hour Question
Where did the recorder musical instrument get its name from? it doesn't record anything.
David, Highbury
Answer
**Definitive **
Name: Francis, Hornchurch
Qualification: Music teacher
Answer: The recorder is one of the few instruments in the woodwind sections of the orchestra that doesn’t have a reed. It never had a reed, when they were made they had a whistle mouth piece that is based on the school whistle that they use in the playground now. That’s why the children learn them because it’s so easy to play.
In Latin, the ‘re’ bit means to play it again and the ‘cord’ bit means to remember if off by heart.
