The A556 in Cheshire is closed in both directions near the M56 as firefighters tackle the blaze that broke out at about 20:00 GMT.

North West Motorway Police have said the driver of the lorry was "safe and well".

The force also tweeted that they are in the process of starting to turn the trapped traffic, but the fire is still ongoing.

Dramatic pictures posted by the police on Twitter show the burning lorry in flames.

Highways England tweeted that the fire was causing "significant delays in both directions".

A spokesperson for Highways England also said: "#A556 southbound at #Mere (#A50 #Mere #OverTabley #TattonPark) is currently CLOSED due to a fire.

"Traffic Officers @CheshireRCU @NWmwaypolice & @CheshireFire are en-route."

Drivers are being advised to plan ahead and consider alternative routes for their journeys.
