A Brazilian dancer who was badly injured after plunging almost 1,000ft down a volcano has died before rescue teams were able to reach her, her family have confirmed.
Juliana Marins, a 26 year old dancer and publicist from Rio de Janeiro, had been hiking in the early hours of June 21 before she slipped and fell from the hiking trail.
Drone footage of Ms Marins’ fall showed her struggling in a ravine, after plummeting 984ft down a steep hill from the hiking trail.
Ms Marins fell into the dangerous Cemara Tunggal territory, with no water, food or access to shelter. Due to injuries sustained from the fall, she was also unable to climb back up to the original trail.
Other tourists had spotted Ms Marins after hearing her call for help, and immediately told authorities.
Rescuers were quickly deployed on a four-day search mission, but were not able to retrieve Ms Marins until it was too late.
Ms Marins’ family confirmed her death in a social media post.
'Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was. With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive,” they said.
“We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”
Ms Marins had been travelling throughout east Asia and Indonesia since February, and had planned to hike Indonesia’s second largest mountain, Mount Rinjani.
Ms Marins had posted on social media on May 29, saying she was finding her trip “intense” and “unpredictable”.
“Taking a long trip alone means that the feeling will always be more intense and unpredictable than we are used to. And that's okay. I've never felt so alive” she said.
Nikolas Osman, spokesperson for the East Lombok Police, told local press she was part of a hiking group, but had fallen behind the rest of the group when she stopped to rest.
“While heading to the summit of Rinjani on the way to the Cemara Tunggal area, the victim experienced fatigue and the guide at that time advised her to rest,” he said.
“Then the five guests in the tour group were taken by the guide to continue the journey. However, by the time he returned to fetch her, the Brazilian woman was already missing.”
The rescue team deployed drones on their four-day search for Ms Marines. They initially spotted her on June 22, but were unable to find her when they deployed a team to the same spot.
It’s thought she had moved to try and climb back up the mountain to safety.
Mount Rinjani is an active volcano located on the Indonesian island of Lombok. It stands at 3,700m (12,200ft), and is roughly 2,590m (8,500ft) above sea level.
It is a popular destination for hikers and adventure seekers, known for its crater lake Segara Anak.
