‘He will be cherished in our hearts forever,' British boy, four, dies in swimming pool tragedy on holiday in Tenerife

Tributes have been paid to a boy who died in a swimming pool while on holiday in Tenerife.

Four-year-old Edward James Watson Massey from Co Down in Northern Ireland, has been remembered as a "precious and happy little boy."

The incident, which happened in the San Miguel de Abona area of the island, was reported in an online death notice.

Edward was pulled unresponsive from a hotel pool by a lifeguard and was found to be in cardiac arrest.

A nurse gave CPR instructions over the phone, and instructed the caller to locate a defibrillator and begin resuscitation procedures.

First responders performed CPR in an effort to save his life. Two ambulances and a helicopter were also despatched but he was later pronounced dead.

Spanish broadcaster Telecinco said: "The child died after failing to recover from a cardiorespiratory arrest following a rescue from a hotel pool."

Edward is remembered as the precious son of Richard and Joanne and a "loving brother and best friend" of Victoria.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

The online statement reads: "Edward will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all his friends and family circle.

"He will be cherished in our hearts forever. Our lives will never be the same without him."

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British child who has died in Spain, and are in touch with the local authorities.”
