Donald Trump gave a furious and sweary response to the US media after Iran and Israel traded missiles hours after a ceasefire was called.

The president had said at around 5am BST that both countries had agreed to a temporary peace but this was broken by Iran two and a half hours later, according to Israel.

Tehran has denied the claims of defence minister Israel Katz that it fired on targets on Tuesday but Israeli forces have been mobilised to strike back.

An enraged Mr Trump spoke to the press pack outside the White House as he departed for a Nato summit meeting in the Netherlands.

He called on both sides to calm down and his strong words followed a series of equally loaded messages on his Truth Social account.

What did Donald Trump say to reporters?

Mr Trump was walking to his helicopter when he spoke to assembled members of the US media.

“I think they both violated it,” he said of the ceasefire.

“I’m not sure they did it intentionally, [it is possible] they couldn’t reign people back. I don’t like the fact that Israel went out this morning at all and I’m going to see if I can stop it.”

He then went on a rant about the “fake news” reported by CNN about the state of the Iranian nuclear plants that he says were destroyed on a raid by US B2 planes. “You are gutless losers,” he said about CNN. “I have no choice but to watch that garbage and it’s all garbage.”

Mr Trump was then asked about the latest bombing raids.

“I gotta get Israel to calm down now. Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs, the likes of which I’ve never seen before, the biggest load that we’ve seen.

“I’m not happy with Israel. I’m not happy with Iran either. But with Israel, they just go out and drop everything you have on them…”

“We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f**k they’re doing.”

Trump’s Truth Social posts

The first message on Truth Social came out overnight and read: “THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!”

He then added: “ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly “Plane Wave” to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect! Thank you for your attention to this matter! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.”

A third message read: “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.”
