The waxwork of French president Emmanuel Macron has been stolen from a Paris museum ‘by Greenpeace activists’ amid an anti-Russia protest.
It has been stolen by several people claiming to be Greenpeace environmental activists.
According to a police source, two women and a man entered the Grevin Museum in central Paris posing as tourists – covering the waxwork figure with a blanket and leaving the museum through an emergency exit.
Another outlet reported that a man later contacted the museum - claiming to be a Greenpeace member and admitting responsibility for taking the figure.
Shortly afterward, activists held a protest outside the Russian embassy in Paris’s 16th arrondissement.
They displayed placards, a Russian flag, spoof road signs, and a wax statue of French President Emmanuel Macron.
The director general of Greenpeace France, Jean-François Julliard, said: “For us, France is playing a double game.
“Emmanuel Macron embodies this double discourse: he supports Ukraine but encourages French companies to continue trading with Russia.
“Emmanuel Macron is being specifically targeted because he bears particular responsibility in this situation.”
Mr Julliard added that Macron "should be the one to lead European discussions" to end contracts between European countries and Russia.
Despite sanctions - France has carried on importing large amounts of gas, uranium and chemical fertiliser from Russia.
According to Polish think tank Forum Energii, between 2021 and 2022, France tripled its imports of Russian industrial nuclear products.
The activists said Macron "does not deserve to be exhibited in this world-renowned cultural institution until he has terminated French contracts with Russia and initiated an ambitious and lasting ecological transition on a European scale".
