An effigy of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has been found hanging from a bridge in Rome.

Police in Rome have launched an investigation after a dummy emulating Greta Thunberg was found hanging from a bridge.

The effigy is dressed in a yellow poncho and has Greta's trademark plaits and a sign saying "Greta is your God" around its neck.

Images of the dummy have been shared on social media.

Local media has reported that the effigy was strung up by a group called Gli Svegli, or "The Awake" in English.

The Mayor of Rome, Viginia Raggi, condemned the effigy in a tweet.

She wrote: "Shameful the mannequin of @GretaThunberg found hanging from a bridge in our city. To her and her family my solidarity and that of the whole @Roma. Our climate commitment does not stop."

Following her impassioned speech at the United Nations, where she criticised world leaders for only "talking about money and fairytales of eternal economic growth."

Her comments were criticised by world leaders including Donald Trump, who appeared to mock the teen by tweeting: "She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!"

Russian president Vladimir Putin also criticised Greta as a "kind, but poorly informed teenager".
