Israel hit key Iranian targets in a fresh series of devastating airstrikes including attacks on the headquarters of the country’s elite military police force and blowing off the front of its most notorious prison.

Projectiles hit the prison, which houses Iran’s political prisoners, causing damage to parts of it and raising the possibility that dissidents may have been able to escape.

The gates were destroyed in the strike, although Iranian officials said the situation was “currently under control.”

Israel blow open gates to Evin prison

In a post to X, Gideon Sa'ar, Israel's Foreign Affairs Minister, wrote: "We warned Iran time and again: stop targeting civilians!

"They continued, including this morning.

"Our response: Viva la libertad, carajo!"

Alongside the post, Sa'ar shared a picture of the front of Evin Prison, as well as a video of the prison's gate being blasted.

Evin is one of the Islamic Republic’s most symbolically important detention facilities, where prominent activists, foreigners, journalists and dissidents have been held for decades.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian dual citizen, was held there for four years on bogus espionage charges.

Israel Katz, Israel's Minister of Defense, posted to X, the IDF has been using "unprecedented force" to attack Tehran, with the Basij headquarters also listed as a target alongside Evin Prison, as well as other "regime targets and govern

Katz added: "For every shot fired at the Israeli home front, the Iranian dictator will be punished and the attacks will continue with full force.

"We will continue to work to defend the home front and defeat the enemy until all war goals are achieved."
