King Of The Hill and Parks and Recreation star Jonathan Joss has been shot dead outside his home in Texas.
The 59-year-old was found seriously injured by police on Sunday evening after reports of an argument with neighbours.
The actor's husband said the alleged gunman shouted "violent homophobic slurs" at the pair before opening fire.
Taking to Facebook, Tristan Kern de Gonzales said Joss pushed him out of the way, saving his life.
"He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other," he said.
He added the pair had faced regular homophobic abuse from their neighbours.
"We were standing side by side," said Mr Kern de Gonzales.
"When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life."
They had been checking for mail at Joss’ old home, which had previously burned down, killing their three dogs.
Upon approaching the house, they saw one of the dogs’ skulls placed in front of the property.
Seeing it, they began "yelling and crying" when a man allegedly approached them and threatened them with a gun.
San Antonio have said no evidence points towards the shooting being a hate crime.
"Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly," said a statement.
Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, 56, has been charged with murder.
Jonathan Joss rose to fame playing the indigenous American character John Redcorn on the animated show King Of The Hill.
He also appeared in several episodes of the sitcom Parks And Recreation, also playing tribal elder and casino owner Chief Ken Hotate.
Joss had recently returned to the public eye to promote the upcoming reboot of King Of The Hill.
"The cast has been texting together about it all day and we’re just heartbroken," said Nick Offerman, who starred alongside Joss in Parks and Recreation.
