A fire engulfed the geriatric ward of a hospital in Hamburg last night.
The fire began shortly after midnight in the geriatric ward at the Marienkrankenhaus Hospital in the city's Hohenfelde neighborhood.
The fire brigade said they were unable to rescue three of the victims, who died at the scene.
More than thirty-five people were injured, sixteen of them seriously injured.
At least one person is said to be in a life-threatening condition.
Around 220 emergency workers attended the blaze, which was extinguished in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Heavy smoke engulfed all floors of the building, said a spokesperson from the fire department.
Firefighters said several people were trapped due to smoke. They were rescued from the building's windows using ladders.
The fire brigade said they used turntable and portable ladders to rescue patients, several of whom were elderly and had mobility issues.
Other patients were rescued through the hospital's corridors with the use of fire escape hoods, a breathing apparatus used to navigate smoke-filled environments.
Some of the injured patients were treated in the hospital's emergency department, while others were taken to hospitals nearby.
The cause of the fire is still unclear.
