Shelagh Clashes With Farage Over Racist Attacks

14 September 2016, 15:01 | Updated: 15 September 2016, 08:44

Nigel Farage says he doesn’t believe Brexit has anything to do with rise of racist attacks, but if it does, then it’s "regrettable."

Speaking to the outgoing Ukip leader, Shelagh Fogarty asked Nigel Farage whether he was concerned about the rise of racist attacks which has coincided with the vote to leave the EU and whether the two were linked.

"I don't think it is." he said. He also believes the issue is not as bad as people make out, saying "I think we're getting a bit hung up on this."

Police reported a 57% jump in racially motivated crimes in the days following the vote to leave and a number of high profile incidents, including the murder of a Polish man in Essex and a pregnant woman being kicked and losing her baby in a racist attack in Milton Keynes this week.

Mr Farage did not believe these were linked to Brexit, but if they were then they were "regrettable".

"If Brexit has led to any increase in bad language or bad behaviour, it is regrettable but I'm not sure the link is a direct link."
