This is the caller who explained the realities of controversial ‘drill’ music to Darren Adam, after a member of a drill group was stabbed to death in South London.

Jay phoned the LBC host from Newham in East London, and told him that the groups behind the often graphically violent songs are simply “speaking their lives” and “narrating the realities of their society”.

He explained that “they’re not telling people ‘pick up a gun and go kill’” but are instead “saying ‘I’m done this, I’ve done that, I’ve been arrested’.

Darren suggested that drill lyrics are more violent than grime music has been – which could have a negative influence on those who perform and listen to them – a few years ago but Jay told him to compare the words of Stormzy and other big grime artists and he will find that there is little difference in the subjects.
