Alex Salmond has told LBC he supports a Labour MP's proposal for England to have its own national anthem at sporting events.

The idea has been debated in the House of Commons this afternoon.

And the former Scotland First Minister told LBC in the first Alex Salmond Phone-In that he would like Jerusalem to be played at England sporting events.

He said: "i was behind Toby Perkins, the Labour MP for Chesterfield debating an English national anthem. I'm in favour of one, I think there should be one.

"There was a Tory MP, Rees-Mogg, who opposed it. And I thought, 'Right, we're in for a vote'.

"But he didn't have the courage of his lack of convictions and it just passed, it was a bit of an anti-climax.

"If I was voting for an English national anthem I'd go for Jerusalem, a William Blake classic."

Caller Joe in Falkirk had another suggestion for the English anthem - Vindaloo, by Fat Les.
