The UK Border Force has intercepted 13 people attempting to cross the Channel in a small boat.

The Home Office said the men, women and children are Iranian, Egyptian and Iraqi.

They were brought ashore at St Margaret's Bay, in Kent, after being found around four miles off the coast.

A spokesperson said they are being examined by doctors and will then be transferred to immigration officials for interview.

Official figures show that 725 migrants arrived illegally in Kent between January and July of 2019.
