Coronavirus as it happened: MPs urged to release lockdown exit strategy
19 April 2020, 08:44
MPs were urged to clarify the exact nature of Britain's exit strategy from the coronavirus lockdown as the country's death toll passed 16,000 on Sunday.
596 more people died in hospital over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 16,060.
The latest figures come as ministers were facing mounting pressure to establish a proper exit strategy to bring the UK safely out of lockdown.
But Education Secretary Gavin Williamson refused to give a date for schools reopening at the daily Downing Street press conference.
