Police in Dorset are investigating the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl who was attacked in an abandoned stone tower.

The victim reported the attack happened at around 3am on Saturday morning in a disused stone tower known locally as "the old windmill"

A police cordon remained at the scene on the isle of Portland throughout Saturday as officers continued their investigation.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape but has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Paul Chessell of Dorset Police said: “We understand there may be concern from the local community in relation to this incident but I would like to reassure members of the public that a full investigation is underway in relation to this report.

“The victim is being supported by specially-trained officers and residents may see increased police activity in the area as this matter is investigated."

He added: “I would urge members of the public to refrain from speculation in relation to this incident, particularly on social media, as it could impact the ongoing investigation.”
