Sadiq Khan told Shelagh Fogarty he was eyeing up her glass of water as he admitted he was finding his fast for Ramadan difficult.

The Mayor of London joked that he was eagerly awaiting 9.21pm when he could eat and drink again.

Speaking on Speak To Sadiq on LBC, Shelagh Fogarty asked: "It's Ramadan. [Are you] fully observant of the fasting?"

Mr Khan replied: "Oh I'm struggling.

"I was looking at your glass of water there. The fast time is 9.21 today.

"Let me tell you a true story. I was doing some media the other day and I said to my wife that I wasn't mumbling because of the fast. And she replied, 'No more than you usually do'."

But he had a serious point as well, adding: "What's lovely about London - and I made this point to Matt, the proud gay Londoner - is that you can be who you are.

"You can be who you are, whether you're gay, lesbian, whether you're ethnic minority, whether you're a woman, whether you're disabled, whether you're a Muslim.

"I want to be the Mayor for all Londoners. I'm not the Muslim Mayor. I'm the Mayor, who happens to be a Muslim."
