The comedian announced the news of her marriage on Tuesday, revealing that she met "her person" at the age of 49.

But, opening up about their relationship in her new book ‘I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You’, Miranda revealed she “briefly” split from her partner shortly before he popped the question.

She wrote: "I admitted that I was longing for love within a romantic relationship too, for that one person who truly got me, but my hope for that was very, very slim."

Miranda quickly realised she had made a mistake, writing: "I didn't need to run away."

Describing their relationship, she said: "I had been vulnerable, yet I felt dignified.

"I had shown him the silliest me, the irritable me, the farting me, the no-make-up me, the teary me, the deep me.

"I trusted that he was there because he liked me."

Documenting the past 10 years of her life, the actor’s book touches on the challenges posed by ill health - most notably her battle with Lymes Disease.

At one point in the tome, Miranda describes the romantic moment her partner proposed.

The actress explained the couple went to Kew Gardens for a walk on an "ordinary January day".

"We stood still on the bridge overlooking the lake when the silence was pierced as he rather seriously said, 'Miranda'.

"I turned around and as I did he got down on one knee. 'Miranda...'" she wrote.

"I don't remember anything else because I simply burst out crying, apparently saying yes before he had finished the sentence (awkward if he'd been tying a shoelace...)"

However, Miranda told the BBC’s One Show that her husband’s identity would remain a secret.

She said: "It's a little undercurrent in the book, I'm not going to reveal how we met because that's a little bit of a twist.

"He's my best friend, we had the best fun and I'm just thrilled to be a young bride at 51."
